Disenfranchised Children
Disenfranchised children often face unique challenges that deeply impact their emotional well-being. Poverty, lack of stability, and the absence of consistent positive relationships can contribute to feelings of abandonment, low self-esteem, and emotional distress. These circumstances may lead to difficulties in forming healthy attachments, managing their emotions, and navigating the complexities of their young lives. The absence of a secure support network can hinder their development and future prospects, highlighting the critical need for targeted mental health services.
At Love & Time, we are committed to bridging this gap by providing at-risk children with the essential mental health support they deserve. Our first step is to collaborate with the San Diego Unified School District (the home base for Love & Time) where we are currently operating under the umbrella of the San Diego Harbor Police Foundation, offering after-school tutoring and sports/activities at Perkins Elementary through a program titled: Teachers RUL. “RUL” is an acronym for Respect, Unity, and Love. We currently work with children from third to fifth grade who have high adverse childhood experiences scores. As you are aware, children with high ACE scores are not only at a higher risk for psychosocial issues but also at a higher risk for organic diseases in their lifetime, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, and cancer. Our goal is to continue screening these wonderful students via the SAEBRS (Social, Academic, and Emotional Behavior Risk Screener) and the Rosenberg self-esteem screening tool. For those students at risk, we aim to provide counseling. Our approach is rooted in empathy, understanding, and the belief that every child has the potential to heal and thrive. Once we reach our fundraising goal, we intend to hire experienced therapists specializing in trauma-informed care, creating a safe and nurturing environment where these children can freely express their thoughts and emotions.
We understand that each child’s story is unique, and our tailored therapy plans address their specific needs and challenges. In addition to therapy, we will collaborate with caregivers, social workers, and other stakeholders to create a holistic support network, ensuring that the children receive consistent care and guidance. By offering these essential mental health services, Love & Time seeks to empower our at-risk children to rewrite their narratives, equipping them with the emotional tools to overcome adversity and embrace a brighter future.
